Octagonal Table Clock with Alarm
Furstenfelder, B.
Germany, circa 1740
Desription
The silver champlevé dial has a central alarm disc and gilt masks around the bezel with leaf and shell border. The movement is signed B.Furstn Felder, Fridtbe (Friedberg). The alarm employs two hammers with decorated hammer heads, and the repeat is operated by a push piece, striking on two bells.
The octagonal style has roots going back to the earliest table clocks. The production of this clock in 1740 is evidence that German clockmakers adhered to early styles and methods when other regions had moved on to more modernized forms.
