Organ Clock with Automata
Creator unknown
Black Forest Region, circa 1875
Desription
This extraordinary clock with organ and automaton is in the form of a mountain chalet. The clock dial is reminiscent of the cuckoo clocks of the Black Forest region, but the similarity stops there. The realistic building is covered in finely carved life-like elements such as a beehive and chicken coop; realistic dogs, cats, and baskets. Each shingle is intricately hand carved. There are staircases, balustrades, balconies; delicate carving that looks like stonework and masonry. Decorative fretwork throughout, as well as carved vines around the base with a crest in the center. Atop the structure is a magnificent feathered automaton singing bird with life-like sound, the roof to the chimney serving as the bellows. The musical organ
movement plays twelve different tunes.
