Ormolu Horse Figural Mantel Clock

An exquisitely rendered gilt-bronze horse figure, stamped, St. Germain, surmounted by a drum-shaped ormolu case containing the clock, dial signed Durand a Paris. An elegant gilt-bronze urn surmounts the clock.

This majestic piece shows Saint-Germain’s transition to the neoclassical style. His interest and willingness to embrace a more stately, regal form had a profound influence on the development of neoclassicism in France. He made subtle changes beginning in the 1760s, artfully incorporating quieter, more restrained elements in his signature rococo style.
