Ormolu Horse Figural Mantel Clock
Movement: Durand à Paris, Bronzier: Saint-Germain, Jean-Joseph
France, circa 1765
Desription
An exquisitely rendered gilt-bronze horse figure, stamped, St. Germain, surmounted by a drum-shaped ormolu case containing the clock, dial signed Durand a Paris. An elegant gilt-bronze urn surmounts the clock.
This majestic piece shows Saint-Germain’s transition to the neoclassical style. His interest and willingness to embrace a more stately, regal form had a profound influence on the development of neoclassicism in France. He made subtle changes beginning in the 1760s, artfully incorporating quieter, more restrained elements in his signature rococo style. Throughout his illustrious career, Saint-Germain was always open to new ideas.
