Restauration Ormolu and Gold-Gilt 'Jump Hour' Night Timepiece
Fatton, Eleve De Breguet (“Studio of Breguet”)
France, circa 1820
Desription
A rare and delightful timepiece from the studios of Breguet, sold by his agent, Fatton, in London. Unusual features and decoration including: mer-lion and mer-unicorn mounts, relief-case rose flanked by oar and trident, all corners cast with dolphins. The outer chapter ring contains the signs of the zodiac. The engine-turned ormolu center with oval signature cartouche reads, FATTON/Eleve de Breguet/No.32/LONDON. The outer chapter ring is attached to a frosted glass inner chapter ring with numerals. A candleholder is positioned in the back (with its own chimney to release the smoke of the lit candle), which illuminates the time through the frosted glass dial. The hour hand “jumps” at the half-hours. There is a sprung bracket to one side for a, now lacking, magazine of candles.
