Shelf Clock with Painted Dial and Reverse Painting
Thomas, Seth (1785–1859)
Connecticut, circa 1822
Desription
Wooden works movement in pillar and scroll case. Reverse painting on bottom panel of an architectural scene. Label on inside reads, Clocks Made and Sold by Seth Thomas in Plymouth, Connecticut. Warranted if Well Used. This five wheel-wheel version was the subject of litigation between Eli Terry and Seth Thomas. However, after the dismissal of the lawsuit, Seth Thomas did include “patent” on his label. That label is missing from this clock, which indicates that this clock dates no later than the early 1820’s.
