Silver Mantel Clock

This unusual mantel clock is mounted in a bold hourglass-shaped silver case by Benjamin Smith II and the back plate of the movement is engraved, Vulliamy London N1319. The case is adorned with a rocaille type bezel, foliage, shell and scroll motifs. The top is in the form of an open Bible, the surround engraved with the motto, "The law is my meditation all the day.” The front of the base contains the following inscription: "Presented to THE REVEREND THOMAS LEWIS, OF UNION CHAPEL, ISLANTON, By a numerous and attached People, to mark their grateful sense of his long and useful services, and to record the exemplary piety, affection, zeal and judgement, which for more than THIRTY YEARS have characterized both his private and public life as a faithful Minister of Jesus Christ. AUGUST 1836".
