Stone Quarry

Dietrich, Thomas

Appleton, Wisconsin, circa 1950

Desription

In this painting, Dietrich has made a stone quarry look beautiful, thus elevating a mundane setting to the level of art. He once said that anything is as worthy of being painted as a Greek vase, if it interests the artist. He often selected a subject because its shape and color spoke to him. He painted several quarries during his career. Dietrich painted ordinary people and everyday scenes in and around Appleton, Wisconsin. As a Regionalist artist, he interpreted the geography, industry, and psychology of his hometown.
