Tallcase Clock with Calendar and Seconds Dial
Brokaw, Isaac (1746–1846)
Bridgetown & Elizabethtown, New Jersey, circa 1820
Desription
Eight day duration, time, and strike on bell, weight driven brass movement in a mahogany veneered case with high arched top, barley twist full columns flanking hood and barley twist and cross hatched 3/4 columns flanking trunk on a base with finely shaped skirt and straight feet. The American-made painted metal dial has calendar date aperture, seconds dial and fruit motif painted in the arch.
Away from the major clockmaking centers of Philadelphia and Boston, regional differences appear. The barley twist columns on this clock have a unique flair, exhibiting regional personality.
Isaac Brokaw was a well-respected New Jersey clockmaker. Most of his significant works were made after moving to Elizabethtown. His father-in-law, Aaron Miller, bequeathed his clockmaking tools to Isaac. Miller and Brokaw’s work often reflects Dutch traditions: central New Jersey was known as an early Dutch settlement.
