Tallcase Clock with Moon Dial

Federal tallcase clocks from the Southern states exhibit a flamboyance not seen in the North. The ornate features on this clock include finely crafted twisted columns on the hood, trunk and base and the delicate feet. Baltimore cabinetmakers had access to indigenous and exotic woods to showcase their skills. The graceful swan’s neck pediment is reminiscent of Pennsylvania clockmaking. This is no coincidence: Craftsmen from Pennsylvania settled in the region and established a long-lasting and flourishing clock industry.
