Tallcase Clock with Moon Dial, Strike and Calendar

Godschalk, Jacob (d. c. 1780)

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1770

Desription

This tallcase clock with strong Chippendale influences exemplifies the Philadelphia style of the colonial period. The carved rosettes and flambeau finials are indicative of this style. The narrow trunk door and the “turtle” design on the base are regional features. The dial was pieced together using parts from other brass dials to conserve brass. The rough-hewn brass dial plate suggests provincial origins.

Jacob Godshalk (an anglicized version of Godschalk) was a respected maker during his lifetime. Originally working in Towamencin Township, Pennsylvania, he moved to Philadelphia before 1760. There he supplied dials and movements to leading cabinetmakers. He also produced thirty-hour and eight-day tallcase clocks, some of which still survive.
