Tallcase Clock with Strike and Calendar
Bryant, Adam (d.c. 1804)
New Hanover, Pennsylvania, circa 1755
Desription
This clock is an excellent example of the Pennsylvania school of clockmaking developed by German, Dutch and English immigrants. The top scrolled pediment ends in simple carved rosettes. The rosettes and the “turtle” shaped panel on the base are motifs associated with this region. The thin brass dial plate with strapping is indicative of the conservation and repurposing of brass. The movement is American-made and thirty-hour (one-day) duration.
Adam Brant (also spelled Brandt) was a talented early American clockmaker who was working in New Hanover, Pennsylvania, as early as 1750. Until recently, he was known only for his painted dial clocks, which date from the late 18th century. Unfortunately, there is very little biographical information available on this excellent maker.
