Telleruhr Wall Clock

Martin , Johann

Germany, circa 1680

Desription

The brass chapter ring is set within a richly gilded surround decorated with a putto beating drums, foliate scrolls, and other musical and martial trophies. The gilded back plate is signed, Johann Martin in Augspurg. The hammer head is engraved with a human face. Brass drum case is fitted with a bell to the hinged back.

Telleruhr, or dish clocks as they were known, took up little space on the wall and were quite unique. They were suspended on an arm usually made of forged iron. The cases were made of stamped and pounded metal with highly decorative motifs. Often silver was used, which was highly prized, making them quite dear. This is a fine example of the uniquely German/Austrian design, which was resurrected by the French in later centuries.
