The Last Supper

Desription
Louis Comfort Tiffany’s name is most often associated with his well-known lamps and stained glass windows. This bronze and mosaic panel depicting the Last Supper provides an example of the more unusual but equally exceptional types of work created through his influence.
This panel replicates Leonardo da Vinci’s famous 15th-century mural painting, The Last Supper, which covers a wall in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. Our panel of Christ and the Apostles is cast in bronze in high relief and is placed amid multicolored glass mosaics.
In a collaborative effort, Tiffany Studios produced the mosaics, and the bronze work came from the Tiffany Furnaces. The Tiffany operations were huge. Tiffany hired employees from many artistic backgrounds, allowing for joint in-house design and fabrication efforts. The firm benefited from greater control over quality and production timing.
This Last Supper panel traveled to other parts of the world before joining this Collection. It was in a private collection in Havana, Cuba, before becoming part of The Garden Museum Collection in Matsue, Japan.
