Triple-Axis Tourbillon Marine Chronometer with Constant Force Escapement, No. 2

Good, Richard; Good, Timothy

London, 1982

Desription

This unique 8-day marine chronometer was commissioned by Seth G. Atwood (1917–2010), founder of the former Time Museum in Rockford, Illinois to celebrate living horologists.

The present chronometer by one such modern horologist, Richard Good, is a further development on the double-axis tourbillon created by the distinguished horologist Anthony G. Randall (b. 1938). The goal of the triple-axis tourbillon was to eliminate any positional error that occurs in portable timekeepers. Such an undertaking was very difficult and required significant additional gearing. Interestingly, because Atwood intended for the commission to be a marine chronometer, the timepiece was put on gimbals. However, this feature cancels out any advantage the chronometer would have received from the triple-axis tourbillon.
