Walnut Longcase Clock

Tompian, Thomas (1639–1713)

London, circa 1680

Desription

This excellent early eight day time and strike longcase clock, has a finely engraved dial signed Tho. Tompion, Londini Fecit, with seconds dial and calendar aperture. The well-proportioned walnut case has stately ebony-line inlay and finely turned twisted columns. Early fine features include bolt-and-shutter maintaining power, latches to the dial feet and to the six ring-turned pillars, and rising hood.

Stately, refined elegance is exhibited in this clock. This clock was produced before Tompion’s numbering system. But even in these early years of his career, his sophisticated production methods allowed him to craft clocks of exceptional quality for his burgeoning clientele.
